Views from a Front Porch…Friends and Grief

Friends are, in my opinion, the single best part of any person’s life. I don’t have a lot of friends but the ones I have are quality. And I have to say that when they hurt, I hurt.

One of my best friends just lost her companion of the last fourteen years. I never ‘got’ their relationship. They epitomized the old saying ‘opposites attract’. She is very dynamic and he was very introverted. But he made her happy, so I loved him for that. He was quiet and sweet and a very talented musician.

I cannot change what has happened and I cannot make her pain go away. But I can continue to be there for her and love her like a sister.

I can also learn that no matter how much we love someone, we do not always know what’s in their minds or in their hearts. We cannot own that. We can only accept, grieve, remember the good times, and then put one step in front of the other to move forward.

I will try to help my friend through her grief, help her remember him and the good times, help her accept what has happened, and help her move forward. It’s all any of us can do for those friends who are like family and whom we love.

We can also remember to live each day to its fullest and not waste the moments we get to spend with our friends. Start today. Tell your friends and your family that you love them. Tomorrow may bring grief, and when that happens you will have the memory that they knew they were loved.
